1. Ultra-Narrow Hem — Under 0.3cm
This is the finest hem option we offer, and it’s frequently specified by our Japanese export clients who have exacting standards for premium custom bandanas. An ultra-narrow hem gives the finished product an incredibly clean, refined look with minimal visible border — ideal for high-end custom bandana orders where every millimeter matters. This level of precision requires skilled operators and well-calibrated machinery. It’s not the right choice for every product, but when a client wants the absolute best, this is where we go.
2. Narrow Hem — 0.3cm
The 0.3cm rolled hem is our standard three-fold hem, and it’s the most commonly used width across our product range. It’s clean, professional, and works well with most woven fabrics. Ant fabric has a tendency to fray and unravel at the cut edge during production. A 0.5cm hem width gives us just enough material to fully encapsulate those loose fibers, preventing fraying and ensuring a clean, durable edge. For large custom bandana manufacturing, this width offers structural integrity without adding visual bulk.

4. Wide Hem — 0.8cm
The 0.8cm hem is rarely specified for bandanas — and for good reason. On a standard bandana, a hem this wide can look visually disproportionate and throw off the overall aesthetic balance of the product. We only use this width when a client specifically requests it to achieve a distinctive, intentional look.
Where this width truly shines is in custom table mat manufacturing and similar home textile products, where a wider, more substantial hem is both functional and visually appropriate.
That said, if your brand is looking for bandanas that stand out from the crowd with a unique structural detail, the 0.8cm hem can be a deliberate design choice — just done intentionally.

The corners of a custom bandana are where craftsmanship is most visible. There are two approaches, each with distinct advantages and trade-offs.
Clipped Corner (Diagonal Trim — Recommended)
The preferred method at Pace-Setter is the 45° diagonal corner clip. Before feeding the fabric into the rolled hem folder, the operator folds the corner point and trims a small amount at a 45° angle.
Why we do this:
- Machine compatibility: Different hem folder attachments have different entry widths. The diagonal clip allows the fabric to feed smoothly into the folder without bunching or jamming.
- Perfect 90° corners: After stitching, the clipped corner forms a crisp, sharp 90° right angle — giving the finished custom bandana that neat, squared-off appearance that looks professional and premium.
The catch: Corner clipping is a skill. A well-executed clip produces tight, clean corners with consistent thread density and seamless visual flow. A poorly executed clip — whether too much or too little fabric removed — results in rounded or distorted corners, uneven stitching, and a noticeably lower-quality finish. This is why we invest in operator training and quality checks specifically at this production stage.
Unclipped Corner
When corners are not clipped, the hemming process creates a small tubular fold at each corner. This is not inherently wrong, but it does result in:
- Slightly thicker, more raised corner points
- Less crisp 90° definition
- A different aesthetic that some clients may not prefer for premium custom bandanas
For certain product types or when corner treatment is not a priority specification, this method can work fine. But for clients who care about sharp presentation — particularly those ordering custom cotton promotional bandanas or high-end custom bandanas — we always recommend the clipped corner approach.

Stitch density (stitches per centimeter) directly affects both the durability and the visual quality of your custom bandana’s hem. Here’s how we categorize it:
Standard Density — 3 Stitches per cm
A stitch density of 3 stitches/cm is the industry standard for promotional custom bandanas. It’s sufficient for most applications and keeps production costs and lead times efficient. High Density — 4 to 5 Stitches per cm

- Stronger, more durable hems that withstand repeated washing
- A finer, more refined visible stitch line

Problem 1: Wavy / Lettuce-Edged Hem ( Ripple Edge)
What it looks like: The finished hem ripples or waves like a lettuce leaf instead of lying flat.
Root cause: The fabric’s warp and weft threads have different tension and elasticity levels. When stitched, one direction pulls tighter than the other, causing the edge to pucker and wave.
Solution: Adjust the feed tension and presser foot pressure. For fabrics prone to this issue, operators slow the machine speed and guide the fabric more carefully. Fabric pre-tension before entering the folder also helps.
Problem 2: Thread Breakage During Stitching
What it looks like: The thread snaps mid-seam, leaving an incomplete stitch line.
Root causes: The thread bobbin has run out, or the thread tension is uneven — pulling too tight at certain points and snapping.
Solution: Regular bobbin monitoring is part of our QC checklist. For tension-related breaks, we recalibrate the machine’s tension settings and check for any burrs or rough spots on thread guides.
Problem 3: Thread Loops / Skipped Stitches
What it looks like: Loose thread loops appear on the top or bottom of the fabric.
Root cause: The spring tension beneath the needle plate is incorrectly set, causing inconsistent thread loose.
Solution: Adjust the spring tension beneath the needle foot. This is a mechanical calibration issue that our technicians address during regular machine maintenance.
Problem 4: Rounded Corners Instead of 90° Angles
What it looks like: The corners of the finished custom bandana are curved or soft instead of sharp and square.
Root cause: Operator technique — the 45° corner clip was either too generous or too conservative, disrupting the geometry of the fold.
Solution: Operator retraining and practice on sample fabric. We maintain strict corner-cutting templates for consistency across shifts. This is a skill gap issue, not a machine issue.
Problem 5: White Showing at Hem Edge (Color Bleed at Corner)
What it looks like: The hem edge, particularly at corners, shows white or unprinted fabric where the ink has been damaged.
Root cause: This issue is specific to digitally printed custom bandanas. At the corners, the machine’s feed dogs (the serrated grip mechanism beneath the fabric) make repeated abrasion with the same spot as the needle works through the thick fold. This mechanical abrasion literally removes ink from the print surface.
Solution: Reduce machine speed at corners. Some operators also slightly adjust the corner entry angle to minimize repeated feed dogs contact. For high-value custom digital print bandanas, this step is handled by our most experienced operators.
Problem 6: Thread Veering Off Line
What it looks like: The stitch line drifts away from the intended hem position.
Root cause: The needle is too thick for the fabric weight, causing it to push the fabric sideways rather than piercing cleanly.
Solution: Switch to a finer needle gauge. Needle selection should always match the fabric weight and type — something our setup team checks before each production run.
Problem 7: Hem Too Tight / Puckering Along Seam
What it looks like: The hem pulls the fabric and causes visible puckering along the stitch line.
Root cause: The upper thread tension is set too high, pulling the fabric inward as the stitch forms.
Solution: Loosen the thread spool spring tension. A properly balanced tension should allow the stitch to sit flat on the fabric surface without pulling.
Problem 8: Fabric Slipping / Hem Not Fully Enclosed
What it looks like: The fabric edge slips out of the hem fold during stitching, leaving raw edge exposed.
Root causes: The fabric is slippery (common with polyester satin bandanas and matte satin bandanas), or the machine is running too fast for the operator to maintain proper fabric control.
Solution: Slow machine speed for slippery fabrics. For extremely smooth materials like custom polyester satin, we may also adjust the hem folder’s grip channel to hold the fabric more securely.
Problem 9: No Back-Tack at Seam End
What it looks like: The thread end at the finish of the hem is loose and begins to unravel.
Root cause: The operator skipped the back-tack (reverse stitch) at the seam end — either by error or to save time.
Why it matters: Back-tacking is a non-negotiable quality step. Without it, the hem is vulnerable to unraveling with use and washing, dramatically shortening the product’s lifespan.
Solution: This is a training and quality control issue. Every seam at Pace-Setter is required to end with a back-tack. It’s checked at the QC inspection stage.
